We all know staring at screens is bad for our eyes. I mean who wasn’t told to not sit too close to the tv as a kid or it would ruin your eyes?
However, in today’s world, we stare at screens more than ever! Phones, computers, televisions are dominating our lives everywhere we look.

When we are staring at computer screens or screens in general, we blink significantly less causing our eyes to become dry and irritated. This is cause the tear film in our eyes evaporates.
To avoid this problem and relieve your eyes simply look away from the screen or out a window regularly. Yawning every half hour also stimulates the glands that create the oily tear film in your eyes.
Not Wearing Sunglasses
Sunglasses come in all shape and sizes, but the most important thing to remember is they are there for a reason and that is to protect your eyes!
Wearing sunglasses helps protect your eyes from the suns UV rays which can cause vision damage and cataracts.
It’s important to make sure you wear sunglasses whenever your outside, even in winter as the harmful rays still penetrate through the clouds.
You also want to make sure the pair of sunglasses you choose provide 100% UVA and UVB protection like these.
Not Sleeping Enough
Not getting enough sleep wrecks havoc with your body, from lowering your immune system, to increasing your risk of diabetes and obesity.
So it’s not surprising that it can also hurt your eyes!
Not getting enough rest can make your eyes red, tired, and itchy, because there isn’t a sufficient amount of time for regeneration during short periods of sleep. In fact, lack of sleep can even harm the optic nerve.
In order to allow your eyes to fully rest and regenerate aim to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
Poor Contact Lens Care
A whopping 90% of people who use contact lenses do not take care of them properly! Poor contact lens care can allow bacterias and germs into the eye and cause inflammation of the cornea.
While it might be annoying there are some things you can do to reduce the risk and take care of your contact lenses properly.
- Always washing your hands before inserting and removing contact lenses.
- Making sure you take out your contacts every time you sleep to avoid dry, itchy eyes and reduce the risk of infection.
- Adding the lenses to the cleaning liquid each night.
- Cleaning your contact lens box at least once a week in hot water and vinegar.
- Never wearing old contact lenses.
