The bugs are called Weevils (flour bugs). They are small little beetles that are usually under 6mm in size.

And they like the same foods you do especially…

  • Pasta
  • Breakfast Cereals

  • Spices
  • Dried beans

But How Do Weevils Get In Food?

Most likely YOU bought them in!

Yes, that’s right you most likely bought them in with your groceries.

That’s because their eggs are already in your pasta, rice, and flour and other pantry items. Just the thought is enough to make you shudder!

As gross as it is, there are way’s to prevent weevil eggs from hatching and infesting the rest of your pantry and simple things you can do to repel them.

One way to prevent an infestation from starting in the first place is to freeze your products.

Simply place newly bought products such as, flour, spices, rice, pasta, etc. in the freezer for a day or two to kill off any eggs that may be lurking in the products.

This is a very effective way of preventing infestations from arising in the first place.

 

Get rid of Weevils with Gum

Now gum might not be the first thing that jumps to mind when thinking about how to get rid of weevils, but some people swear by it!

I can’t personally say if this works or not, but it’s worth a shot, right?

Apparently leaving unwrapped sticks of spearmint gum on your pantry shelves or in area’s that are affected will repel the little invaders!

If anything your pantry will smell minty fresh! 😉

 

Easily Keep Them At Bay

Nutmeg is another great way to keep weevils out.

One or two whole nutmegs buried in your flour and rice will help keep the invaders out.

 

Hot Peppers

If your dried beans or peas are being invaded by weevils then simply add a little dried hot pepper to the storage container. The weevils don’t like it and will be out of your beans in a flash!
