How To Raise Confident Kids: 12 Tips To Build Self-Esteem

Raising children is no easy task, but it can be more difficult when you’re trying to raise confident kids. You try your best to give them everything they need and do all of the right things, but sometimes you feel like their self-esteem still isn’t where it should be. So how do you raise confident kids? This blog post will explore 12 ways that you can help build your child’s self-esteem!

1. Read To Your Child To Build Their Self-Confidence!

Reading is a great way to build your child’s self-confidence. It can also be a great way to instill positive values in children and teach them how to deal with different emotions without getting overwhelmed.

So why is reading and especially reading aloud to your children so great at boosting their self-confidence?

First, reading aloud is an activity that you do with your child. This can help them feel loved and valued because they get to spend quality time with a parent or caregiver who enjoys spending time together.

Second, it’s fun! Reading favorite books will bring joy and laughter into you and your child’s heart.

Third, reading aloud to your child can help them learn how they are feeling. They will be able to tell the difference between different feelings and more importantly know that it’s ok to have those emotions too!

Finally, when you read together with your child, you’re reinforcing their literacy skills- which is a big confidence booster in itself.

2. Show Your Child You Are Confident

Another great way to help build your child’s self-esteem is to model confidence yourself. If your child sees you demonstrate positive self-talk, and have confidence in new experiences or situations they’re more likely to do the same. You might not always feel like it or may feel shy but your children will be watching and you can show them how to combat those negative thoughts with positive ones.

Remember you don’t have to be perfect or fake your confidence. Your child will see right through it and pick up on your insecurities for sure!

For example, if your child is nervous about meeting new people, demonstrate how to introduce yourself and how to ask someone a question. If they are nervous about going into an unfamiliar room, let them see you walk confidently in first so they can follow your lead.

3. Find a Hobby, Sport, or Activity Your Child Loves

Help your child find a sport or activity which they are passionate about. This will give them a sense of achievement and boost their confidence. The more they follow their passion, the more confident they will feel about themselves.

  • For example, if your child loves to draw, then encourage them to sign up for a drawing class at their local art store or museum.
  • Or, if your child likes to sing then sign them up for a music class.
  • If they are more of an athletic person then look into signing them up for a sport.

4. Let Your Child Make Mistakes

As a parent, we often try to pave the way so our children don’t encounter difficult situations. But this can lead to our children never learning how to cope with the world when we’re not around.

Let your child make mistakes: let them try their hand at sports, art, theater, or any other activity, and don’t push too hard for success in a particular field.

Although it might be tempting to fix problems for our kids, these situations provide a great opportunity for them to learn how to deal with failure or solve the issue. Which will greatly boost their confidence.

It’s also important to show your child that their mistakes are just part of learning and everyone makes them; don’t be too hard on them about it.

5. Stop Saying “Good Job” For Everything

praising your child

While we want to congratulate our children on a job well done, we don’t want to overdo it. Children who are praised for simple tasks can become so dependent on the praise that they have trouble coping with failure when not being told how great their work is all the time.

If your child is practicing their handwriting instead of saying “good job” try saying “I love how you’re focusing on writing neatly!”

If they are drawing a picture, tell them how beautiful their artwork is. If they are practicing math problems instead of praising the answer try saying “I love your enthusiasm for learning these new skills.”

This will help build self-esteem and let kids know that we’re proud of them no matter what task or skill level.

This can help children develop their own sense of self-esteem.

6. Set Small Goals

Help your child set some goals which you know they will be able to achieve on their own. Each time your child successfully achieves a goal, take the time to praise them and let them know how proud you are. And help them set a new slightly more difficult goal to achieve.

This will help your child develop their sense of self-esteem as they see that they have accomplished something on their own.

7. Make Time To Connect Each Day

connect with your child

Connecting with your child each day without devices or other distractions can help them feel close to you. When your child knows you are there to listen by seeing you interested in what they have to say, it will help them be confident in themselves.

This can include playing a game together each day or just sitting and talking about their days with you – anything that gives your child the feeling of connection to you.

8. Give Your Child Some Independence

Giving your child some independence will help them feel confident. This can include letting them make decisions about what they wear, how to spend their free time, and what snack to eat – all things that are important for your child’s sense of independence.

Try letting your child choose one family meal a week that they prepare. Letting your child make small choices can help them feel confident in themselves while also respecting their boundaries.

9. Role Play With Your Children

Role-playing with your young child is a great way to boost their confidence. Role-playing is a great way to teach your child how to handle difficult situations and interactions with others in an emotionally healthy manner.

Try role-playing different scenarios with them, such as what they should say if someone asks for something from them and they don’t want to give it away; or letting them be the dentist and you play the role of the child. It will empower your child with the feeling of control.

Role Play With Older Children

Role playing a difficult interaction can also be empowering for older children as well. Role-playing how to react when someone says something inappropriate, or how to stand up for themselves in school are two great examples. Let your child practice these situations and see how it makes them feel

10. Give Your Child Some Chores

Chores are a great way to boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem. They get to feel like they are contributing, which is a powerful feeling for children and adults alike.

Set age-appropriate chores, like washing dishes or folding laundry.

Give your child the responsibility to organize their own tasks and figure out how they’ll get them done best so that you don’t have to do it for them. They will feel competent and confident doing these things on their own without supervision once they are practiced enough.

11. Focus on Your Childs Strengths

Give your child a boost in confidence by focusing on their strengths. Instead of focusing on how they are not good at drawing, for example, focus on what other things your child is great at doing.

Focus on your child’s successes and be proud of them! Make a list together to remind them of everything they can do really well. Celebrate each accomplishment with enthusiasm and positive reinforcement.

Albert Einstien once said

““Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

This statement couldn’t be more true. Focus on the things your child is good at or shows interest in, rather than the things they are not good at or shows no interest in.

12. Don’t Compare Your Child To Others

It’s important for you as a parent not to compare your children to others. Remind them that they are perfect the way they are and should never be ashamed of themselves! No one is perfect, but our kids don’t need us pointing out their flaws or trying to change who they are.

Focus on how great your child is at being him or herself.

Conclusion On How To Raise Confident Kids:

You’re a parent. You want your kids to be happy and confident. And if there’s one thing we know about raising children today it’s that they won’t stay little for long!

With this in mind, why not focus on what really matters – their strengths rather than weaknesses? It sounds like common sense but research suggests that many parents spend more time telling their child who needs help with something instead of focusing on how successful they were when they did something independently or without assistance.

In other words, give them room to learn from mistakes and don’t punish them for making them (unless necessary). We hope these tips have helped you see things through a new lens – after all parenting is hard work!
